  • fuel problems I think-2005 90 HP

I have a 90 HP Johnson and the fuel bulb will not get firm. I am also having a problem with the rpm level constantly going up and down as I drive. It is getting worst. Yesterday it just quit like it gave out of gas. Then cranked back up and stumbled home. Checked fuel filter this morning and looked clean as new. When this first stated I could run wide open and it would do ok but now it's everywhere. HELP
ps: I put a new bulb on but it makes a rattle like noise when pumped as you let go like the old one. Never had one do that before.

Hi Bill, after I had resurected my 1985 140 from the barn and knowing nothing about outboards, I felt compelled to write to you, maybe I could share my escapades. It soulds like maybe a fuel line is loose or broken, allowing air to be sucked in the system. "Do you aim the arrow on the bulb to the sky"? Why I mention this is because of the oneway valves could be stuck, giving you the 'not hard' feeling. Aiming the bulb skyward and squeezing will free up the flap that makes up the bulb. Seems that all the new fuels are causing havoc in the fuel systems now a days. Also, check all your fuel fittings after the pump for loose or able to turn by hand fuel lines. Thats a sign to tighten or replace the clamp or strap.
    Good luck
