Hello everybody,
I am new to this site. I was advised by boats.net technical support to post my issue/question on this site because of all the knowledgeable techs out there who may reply. So Thank you in advance to anyone who may help me out here.
I have a Johnson 25 HP 1980's J25TECSA that has been in storage for 20+ years. Realizing the water pump was not working I opened it up and saw that the water pump housing was cracked. I went ahead and ordered the entire water pump kit (part 0391390) from boats.net found here:
Johnson Outboard Parts 1980 J25TECSA 1980 GEARCASE - 25 Diagram
I was told that the part kit I ordered has been replaced by part kit 0395270 which is the updated version of what I originally ordered by boats.net.
Here's the issue, (take a look at the attached picture to see what I mean) the new plastic water pump housing that came with kit doesn't appear to be able to seal the water in like the previous housing that was removed. The new housing has raised grooves where the old impeller seal (part 0321786) would go making it impossible to use this type of seal. Instead of shipping the new kit with this type of seal they sent 2 o-rings that don't seem to fit anywhere to make a water-tight seal. If you look at my picture the old housing, cup and seal is on the left and the new housing, cup and 2 o-rings is on the right. I am completely baffled by what I am supposed to use these 2 o-rings for. I tried just putting one ring over those ridges and then sliding the cup into the housing but the cup can not slide in all the way, and that would still not create any type of seal. There were no instructions with the kit, generally these are straight forward part swap replacements but this really confuses me. I really doubt that they replaced this original part for a non functional design, so I must be doing something wrong.... all though I am pretty technical myself and am completely stumped.
If anyone out there has seen anything similar to this could you please comment. I can post more picture or even try to upload a short video showing more detail. Thanks guys!
