When I rebuilt the lower unit on my Johnson PJ 225 pxe en Ocean Pro there was an adjustment screw for the bearing housing that moved a little wedge forward and backwards. Does anybody know the purpose of that wedge and how to set it? It's something that appears as if it could not exist and it wouldn't make any difference but it does shift the bearing housing to the side when adjusted.

You don't say what year that engine/gearcase is.
Are you speaking of a large allen screw that's located just forward of the pinion gear bearing, accessible only from the outside?
If so, that's not an adjustment screw... it's a locking screw to keep that bearing in place. Clean the threads of the screw and in the gearcase with lacquer or acetone, then with loctite applied on the screw threads, screw it in until the screw surface is flush with the gearcase surface. Let it dry overnight.

Thanks Joe. It's a 1999. It's not an allen. I won't have access to the boat for a couple weeks otherwise I would post a picture. To give it some context there are a couple of bolts that hold the propeller shaft housing assembly in place one on the top and one on the bottom. This adjustment screw is to the left side in the middle next to the outer case and is part of the assembly. It does not need to be removed to pull the assembly out.Comment
