I changed the impeller on a new to me JW-10 3 hp Johnson. As I was taking off the lower unit it fell on the floor. Now when I Insert the shaft into the lower unit, the propeller does not engage or spin. Is there perhaps a key that fell on the floor, or some other trick?

Assuming that the bottom portion of the driveshaft is splined.................
THe pinion gear on those engines always slide out of line slightly when the driveshaft is removed.
Tip the gearcase forward on a slight angle. Use a thin screwdriver to insert into the pinion gear and gently align it into that forward gear. Now, slip the driveshaft in.
It takes a little practice but you'll get it.

Thanls for the hint. No matter how I tip it, I cannot see anything in the hole for the shaft. I can feel a slight clink, from something moving inside the housing, but there is no sign of a pinion gear. The shaft turned the propeller normally before I pulled it apart. Do I need to pull the propeller assembly out?

The idea is to have the pinion gear up against the forward gear and the screwdriver is to get it centered and aligned with the forward gear 's teeth.
This has always worked for me.... the alternative is to dismantle the gearcase but that would be a PITA to go through every time a water pump is installed.
