I have an issue with the linkage falling out of what acts like neutral safety switch. This motor worked fine then all the sudden linkage that leads to starter recoil won't allow you to pull start. I haven't been able to figure out, any help would be great. Thanks River Guy

Thanks Joe the model # J10RCSE, that what it looks like. This is the linkage that goes to a plastic piece that allows you to pull start. I have moved the plastic part to the middle and taped it, now it will allow me to pull start in gear. It seems to me that something should hold linkage in place. Thanks for any help. River Guy

J10RCSE = 1980 9.9 Johnson
That's a starter lockout mechanism designed to prevent one from starting the engine in gear or perhaps when a certain amount of throttle is applied... I forget which.
I checked my parts book and also a service manual but it says nothing about that small part... and I for one cannot think of a proper manner in which to describe how to put it back in proper operation.
It amounts to a goofy looking spring and that plastic part but the best way to understand how it all goes together would be to look at another 9.9 or 15 hp of the same year (or close to the same year). Sorry I couldn't be of further help.

Thanks Joe, When I saw the model # I also thought it is 9.9 H.P. it has a 15 cowling. I also couldn't find the part listed, so not sure what to call it. I'm able to put back in hole of part but when not under tension just falls out. Thanks for your help I hope someone else may have had same problem. I don't know if bushing wore out or fell out. Another thought that there might be a missing spring clip. I will keep worken on it. Thanks
