  • Motor Jerking

I have a 1972 25hp Johnson runs great starts easy. But when it is in the forward gear it jerks about every 3 1/2 seconds. Does this when going fast or slow. It jerks harder when going fast. Bends the shear pin till it finaly breaks. Kind of hard on the transom too. Any ideas?

May be jumping out of gear. Disassemble gearcase and inspect forward gear, shift dog and shifter for wear.

those are known for bad clutch dogs

they only have 2 ears, not like 6, the newer style

i have 25rl75b motor that does a similar thing

It seems to do a similar thing but about every 2 seconds. Hasnt bent a shear pin yet. I have only just obtained the motor. Gave it to the mechanic to check out .
it had been sitting still for some time. He over hauled the carby and he ran it for an hour and ran well. on the first outing it shuddered in gear , then ran for a bit ok , then started again .
Would this likely to be the same problem?
