  • 1990 40hp shifter rod problem

New to the site, so forgive me if this seems dumb, but I just bought a 1990 tracker with a 40hp (TJ40ELESR) on it. The water pump was not working so I bought a kit to rebuild it. While removing the lower unit, I could not see where to disconnect the shifter rod so I removed the plastic cover that sits next to the water pump, as well as the screw that aligns the shifter fork and pulled the shifter rod out. After I rebuilt the water pump, I put the lower unit back up and thought I had the shifter aligned properly, but it will not shift.

Did I disconnect the wrong end of the shifter rod? How can I fix it?

    Any help would be appreciated!

Shift shaft disconnects at top of shaft under carbs. If pulled shift screw out shift fork can fall down inside gearcase and will have to take gearcase apart to realign.

That is what I was afraid of! Does anyone have instructions for servicing the lower unit, or at least an exploded diagram that I can use to fix it?
