1990 20hp pull start question

I have a 1990 20hp pull start tiller motor..the motor has had the pull start assembly. Removed for some reason and am having trouble finding one ....will a older engine setup work...or is their somewhere I can cross serial numbers to find out for myself if someone know what years will fit my.engine would be greatly appreciated thankss
