  • 1990 Johnson 175 dropped cylinder

I have a low hours GT175 that just lost cylinder #6. Apparently the ring broke and broke the side of the piston. doesn't seem to be much damage to the cylinder wall - just a couple light scratches. is it possible to just replace the one piston and rings and just hone out the cylinder or is this a waste of time/money? Have not taken it apart yet, but doesn't look like much damage at all. Thanks.

Well it depends on the amount of damage and your pocket book. If the damage is as you discribed and money is tight then you should be able to replace that one piston/ring. I would recommend changing the bearings while your that far down. If money is not a problem I would recommend change all piston rings, all bearings and complete a full rebuild. This would insure a long future.
