  • multiple problems

Hi I am somewhat new to the boat motor world. I have a 70 johnson seahorse outboard motor. I think I have multiple issues so i am not sure where to begin. First is there any battery charging device on this engine? it does not appear so. Second, the engine never runs consistantly. It either runs ok but sluggish, not at all, or runs amazing. The only thing about when it is running amazing is it will just kill randomly while cruising on the water. If anyone knows anything or some tips please let me know. If more info is needed from my part then let me know as well and i will do my best to provide better info. Thanks

Yes there is a stator under the flywheel, this charges the battery as well as the ignition coils. There are a number of problems that can cause the symptoms you have described. Low battery voltage, clogged or damaged carburetors, spark plugs, these are all some examples of a possible problem areas.

I also would like some help in finding out what year my motor acutally is. The boat says it is a 1970. All the motor says is Johnson seahorse and on the back it says 70. All other tags have been removed or are at least not there. No serial numbers or anything. From all that i have read it appears that there was no 70hp in 1970. any help would be cool

With out the numbers on the data plate, I cannot assist you in finding the year.
