1984 Johnson 25hp -Spring Detent

I removed my lower unit and did not find a spring detent. My manual says nothing about it. The driveshaft is the splined type. The parts diagram for this boat shows two ball detents and a spring detent between the driveshaft and the propeller shaft. Can't figure out how the spring and ball detent would even seat itself between the two. Any help!?

There is a detent spring and ball on prop shaft for shift dog but don't know of any on drive shaft.
