  • 1968 40hp Solenoid wiring!! Please help a newbie!!

So I was given a boat last week by my neighbor, great boat he just never bought a motor for it...Anyways, boats not important right now...

I bought a 1968 Johnson 40 model number is Rd-30d. I am confused with how to wire my solnoid to my battery and my boats ignition switch... My solenoid has two fat posts, one on either side, and two smaller terminals in the middle. The left side big terminal has a red 4 gauge wire that goes to my starter. But none of the other posts have anything going to them...

On my boat... It is a 1967 Sea swirl. My boats ignition switch has a cluster of wires running from the back of the switch to the back of my boat... Inside there is a green wire, a white wire, a red wire, a black wire with a white stripe, a plain black wire and a brown wire that doesn't go to anything at my ignition switch its just hanging there with nowhere to connect to...I will post a few pics if I can.

I am guessing I connect my battery to either side of the solenoid on the fat connections and to get power to my solenoid but I do not know what at all to do with the rest of the wires...

Any help is greatly appreciated as I am totally new to outboards...

    Hope this will help

Looking at your picture, label the posts on your solenoid, from left to right, as A (big post with cable), B (1st little post), C (2nd little post) and D (other big post).

This information comes out of my Clymer's Shop Manual, which only goes back to 1973, but SHOULD be the same for your motor.

A has a big red cable that connects direct to the + post on your battery
B has a smaller white wire that connects (on a 1973 engine)to the neutral start switch thru a large round (red?)connector
C has a small white wire that connects direct to the safety switch, which looks like it might be on the side of the engine near the terminal block
D has a large red cable (same size as on A)that connects direct to the only terminal (other than the ground strap) on the starter motor.

    Hope this helps.
