  • I need a part number

I had this missive all composed but an errant finger poke and it dissapeared hope I don't send it twice. Anyway, yes I need a part no. but I don't know for what model lower unit. The facts as I know them-- I accuired a 1972 SeaSprite powered by a likewise 1972 Johnson 50 HP electric shift mod 50esl72. I want to restore this rig to original showroom condition so no re-powering permitted -- at this point, maybe reconsidered. The bad news is the lower unit appears to have sustained a small explosion inside since the sides of the housing have bulging protrusions on both sides where the shifter should have been. The good news the deal included a replacement lower unit, ---in- a bucket. While poking thru the parts I find only one bearing housing but saddly it fits into the socket of the old exploded view unit but not into the replacement "new" unit, the slide in part is to big by about 1/8" dia. however the bolt holes look like they line up. So, I think I can conclude that the "new" unit is not from an 50esl72 and I know not from what. Does anyone have knowlwdge of this equipment and can remember from long ago? A way to identify or maybe deduce what it has to be from. Anyone have the parts if I send the unit to them to have a fit test. (gotta be an easier way) would photos help? Could someone with vast experience calculate the odds of the electric shift working first try?

Fun stuff though, are we having fun yet?

They only used hydro-electric shift lower units for 3-4 years, you're probably going to have to sift through the parts breakdowns and try and figure out which one you have.
