  • hot alert at 180 degrees?

115 hp Johnson OB 2003 (I think) electronic ignition carb. Runs fine at low speed (<5 mph) or high (>20 MPH), when temp is under 180. When I run for a bit at moderate speed, engine heats up to just about 175 -call it 180/185 - and then the alarm comes on, goes into S.M.A.R.T mode, shivers/shakes at any attempt to go higher. Getting good water from pee hole at idle. Turn off engine, let cool, then restart and go high speed -where temp stays low (down to 120 or lower) and there's no problem. I can run for a long time with temp at 175 - but as soon as I push a little harder alarm sounds. Ideas? This something I can fix myself?

My 1990 Johnson 150 VRO PRO is doing the same thing. Where can I find out more about the S.M.A.R.T. mode? Is there a way to disable the S.M.A.R.T. mode? I do not believe that the engine is overheated, the pee hole water is barely warm and the engine temp appears normal when I take the cowel off.

Just found out the S.L.O.W. (Speed Limiting Overheat Warning) mode is what limits the RPMs to 2300 and causes the motor to Shiver and Shake. I suspect that one of the temp sensors is bad.

Having same problem with my 175hp looper. As long as I stay below 4000 rpms, it will run all day. Above that, it heats to around 195 and goes into safe mode. I pulled both stats out and ran for a little while and the temp never got above 145 degrees. I'm replacing th stats tomorrow. I tested both of mine in a pan of water and one was opening at 168 and the other at about 175. I think by that time, it's too late for the heads to cool before the alarm goes off. They are supposed to open at 143 degrees.
