1973 Johnson 9.5 HP choke question

I'm very new to forums so I hope I'm doing it correctly. I have a problem with my recently purchased 1973 9.5 HP Johnson outboard. The choke rod where it attaches to the carb has a plastic retainer. I just ordered it from boats.net. It keeps popping out of the slot (not hole) on the carb. Is there another part that this plastic retainer fits into to keep it in the slot? I can't see anything on the print on boats.net that I should get. Can anyone provide a solution?

I just looked through my 1973 9.5 Johnson parts book at the carburetor assembly. I see no bell-crank that has a slot. The choke bell-crank (part #312145) simply has a hole where the nylon #313329 Choke Retainer sits in to hold the long pull choke rod in place.

What is the model number of that engine?

Okay... I checked through all of the 9.5hp models (1964-1973) to see if any of them showed that slotted choke bell-crank... None of the parts books show that slotted bell-crank.

However... in the back of my mind, after looking closely at the picture you inserted (great pic BTW... very clear), I can remember that some of those 9.5hp models had a problem whereas the entire engine could actually move within the casing. This caused the choke to close somewhat (I think)... hard to remember exactly... so far in the past.

Anyhow, the cure, as I remember it was the slotted bell-crank setup... a "fix-it" kit of sorts.

What is missing from your bell-crank is the nylon retainer that the choke rod clicks into........ Part #313329 Nylon Retainer.

That ought to do it. Let me know how you make out after you get it. Should you have another OMC engine sitting around that has more than one carburetor, it's the same nylon retainer that retains the linkage that goes from one carburetor butterfly to the other.

Thanks for responding BTW. I already have the nylon choke rod retainer part & it won't stay in the slot (with retainer installed) when you push/pull the choke. The picture I provided was before I got the retainer. The hole makes sense the slot does not...... a very puzzling 'fix-it" because it's causing another problem. Is a special retainer for the slot bell-crank available?

The retainer as mentioned is available. I wonder if the retainer you have is flawed or the slot is worn as once it's snapped into the slot, it should stay there.

The bell-crank part #312145 that is pictured in all of the parts manuals should cure the problem unfortunately it is no longer available... perhaps you could locate one (used) in some outboard repair shop.

That slotted bellcrank is still just a very dim memory tat I can't really nail down.

I was able to locate a bell-crank at boats.net. I will try it & see what happens. I thank you for your assistance.
