  • 1993 Johnson 48 SPL lower Unit

I have the above motor slipping in drive. I believe it is the clutch dog that is bad. reverse works fine. My plan is to remove the retainer housing and pull shaft & all out inspect and hopefully just replace the the Dog and spring. Of course replace the big seals since nothing is leaking. Any pitfalls or suggestions I need to know about?

There is nothing within the lower unit that would fail in such a manner to cause slipping.

What do you mean by "slipping"? What exactly is the engine doing... how does it act?

The motor runs strong and is fine in reverse, when put in forward the motor still runs fine but the thrust drops and skips. From what I have researched it is possibly a worn clutch dog at best or bad forward gear worse, Or even worse whole bottom end is bad. I am hoping it is the clutch dog $ 70.00 and replace O ring seal (full seal kit is $30.0). So my plan is to remove retaining screws and pull whole set out inspect forward gear and clutch dog. Replace the dog and spring. Replace o ring seals and reinstall.

      What do you think?

If it feels like the engine is hitting a submerged object every so often but only at the higher rpms... yes, that would be a clutch dog problem, having the engine jump out of gear and right back in.

BUT... if it is a case of the rpms increasing and the forward motion of the boat slowing down... that is a case of propeller failure, a propeller slipping hub, in which case the propeller would require re-hubbing or replacing.

Which one is happening in your case?
