  • Trying to Find Age and Model of Motor

I'm new to this forum, so I hope I am posting correctly.
I recently bought a old boat with a Johnson outboard motor. I was told that the motor was a 7.5 HP and the age was in the 70's. I have tried all of the information I could find on the internet and I am still looking for the correct model and HP. The only numbers I can find on the motor are located on the motor on a small silver plate in the block of the motor. I know the motor is a 2 cylinder 2 stoke. The number on the motor is J3197267. I haven't been able to match this number with any of the Johnson motors listed on various websites.
I would be very grateful for any help I could get on this motor.

    Thanks in advance,

    Jim

That is no doubt the Johnson Serial Number. However what is needed is the Model Number.

Look for a small plate attached to the port (left) transom bracket, a quarter size core plug (looks like a small freeze out plug) on the powerhead, or a larger plate that may be attached to the center portion of the engine that would be just above the transom when mounted.

    The older 7.5hp models (1956,57,58) would be AD-10, 11, 12).

Let us know what you find... If nothing... pictures would help.

Thanks for your help and reply. I will look for any additional numbers. I scoured the motor and boat but may have missed something. I'm not sure that the motor is a 7.5 HP, that just what I was told. I know for sure it is a 2 stroke and has 2 cylinders. . I will take some pictures.

The "J" at the beginning of that serial number indicates that the engine is a "Johnson"... however, that blue paint indicates that it is an Evinrude. Also the design of the engine in its entirety is identical to that of a Evinrude 6hp model. My opinion only of course.

The serial number and the core plug upon which it is imprinted appears to be the original... if it were a replacement powerhead, it would be imprinted with RPH in A capital font/print.

Frankly, I'm at a loss to identify the engine, sorry.

I'd suggest that you check further via MarineEngine.com and iBoats.com as there are some fellow members there that may be able to help you.

Thanks for the information and your help. I was told the motor was a Johnson 7.5 HP. However that is what the precious owner was told and may not be the correct information. The motor wasn't registered here in Texas and that's my problem. I need the model and serial number. There is no telling how many times the motor has changed hands so the correct brand and motor size is long gone. Anyway I thank you again for you help and the information.
