Johnson 2001 15Hp - Workshop Manual

Sight unseen, I purchased a softcopy Workshop Manual online. It is around 580 pages and covers Evinrude/Johnson outboards from 1990 through 2001 and spans 1Hp to 70Hp.

At first it looked good, but so far, it hasn't helped for my two problems (starter pawl engagement and throttle cable replacement).

Is there a more compact version that is more specific to my outboard and is easier to read?

I retired from OMC in 1991 so the design of your manual starter may be different than what I'm accustomed to.

However, if your manual starter is one whereas a gear spirals up to engage the flywheel teeth... and your problem is that the gear refuses to spiral upwards, that is due either to someone greasing the unit (grease collects dirt, dirt binds)... OR... the tension spring has somehow jumped out of the groove that's built in to the underneath portion of the gear.

My manual starter is the type where the pawl is an oblong shape intended to get "rocked" outward to engage with one of the notches in the flywheel.

There was gobs of grease around Items #14 and #16. Once cleaned, the starter was much more reliable but not 100% perfect. I'd say 1 in 20 pulls still sees the rope extend 1/3 out of the cowl without engaging.

I very well acquainted with that type (over the flywheel) manual starter that incorporates the plastic/nylon starter pawl. You're on the right track in cleaning all of the grease off as the grease simply eliminates the friction needed to have the pawl swing into a engaging position.

The only part of that assembly that might have a very slight bit of grease is the metal prong that the nylon pawl swivels upon.... everything else should be perfectly clean. The starter functions via a friction principle.

I will clean that area again. I've also ordered an Item #16 as well. It was only a few dollars and maybe the original lost some tension or was worn.
