My 20 HP Evinrude starts and idles fine but as soon as I put it gear the motor dies. It also seems to be backfiring through the exhaust when I give it any throttle and dies instantly. Any idea what could be wrong?

With "all" spark plugs removed, do a compression check... PSI results?
Then check to see if the spark will jump a 7/16" air gap.
If the above are as they should be, the cause of the problem is usually a fouled carburetor... OR... someone has been tinkering with the linkages. -
