Johnson 140 questions

Hello all, new to boats, I have a year unknown Johnson 140
I have a few questions about. I currently have lower unit off replacing water pump and where the connection for the exhaust from upper half to lower unit there is nothing in between no gasket or any kind of spacer. I need to know what goes in between the two housings for my exhaust because it's blowing all inside instead of mostly out propeller

It would help if you stated the year of that 140hp Johnson. Model number?

If you're speaking of the metal housing contact of the gearcase to the long exhaust housing. That's a metal to metal fit that will eventual seal with marine debris. If the water spray bothers you, drop the lower unit 1/4" and use the following sealer.

OMC Adhesive is now Bombardier 3M Product #847 and may be listed as Scotchgrip 847, part number 776964 or "Loctite #518".
