My forward/reverse manual shift is not allowing the prop to engage. I've checked the shift rod connections and they are tight and moves up/down when the shift arm is moved. Could my problem be the clutch dog, detent spring and balls or something else? Are there any special tools required to remove the propeller shaft and its related parts. Is there a video which show how to remove the prop shaft on this or similar model

Hey Larry,
The easiest thing to do is purchase a factory/Seloc/Clymer service manual.
This will help you with your engine.
The diagnostic process will become obvious when using one of these manuals..

and to answer your questions concerning what could be wrong.. yes.
