I have a 2007 15 hp short shaft Johnson. I hit a rock today and damaged the prop as well as the gear case. It runs fine but it sounds like it has come apart somewhere in the middle. It makes this noise even when in neutral. Any guidance on where to start is much appreciated.

The driveshaft, pinion gear and bearing, along with both forward and reverse gear are turning whenever the engine is running.
It's time to drop the lower unit for inspection. Possibly the lower unit hit hard enough to be bent. -

Dropped the lower unit today and did a little fishing. Both the forward, reverse, and pinion gear are all chewed. I guess my next question would be wheres the best place for parts?Comment
