Just picked up a 1976 70hp. Guy I got it from said its been sitting for 3 years and doesn't remember if he ran it out gas before he parked it. Can any of you guys point me in the right direction as to what I should do, or check before I try starting it. Thanks

Some of these procedures were probably done before you bought the engine, but just in case........... Oh, also... before you take a screwdriver or pliers to that engine (unless you're well experienced) take pictures and make notes, don't rely on memory.
Check the gearlube. Fill from the bottom drain hole until the lube flows from the top oil level hole. Use only HiVis 90w gearlube with that mechanical shift model.
Spark plugs should be Champion QL77JC4 plugs gaped at .040 (strong spark) or .030 (long life).
All s/plugs removed... check the spark to see if it will jump a 7/16" gap.
Check the compression. What is the psi reading of all cylinders?
Sitting for three years, fuel would evaporate but the oil would remain to clog fuel passages. The engine may run fine but it is unlikely due to fouled carburetors, in which case...... remove, clean, and rebuild all carburetors as needed.
What is the model number of that engine?
