I'm having a problem with my 1988 vro 40hp. It starts and idles fine. I give it more throttle and it stalls then dies. It will start back up without any problems.

Clean the high speed jets that are located way behind the float chamber drain screw plug. The bra$$ jet has 1/4x20 threads holding it in place horizontally in the bottom center portion of the float chamber.
Fuel must flow freely through that HS jet before the fuel can flow to any other passageway. A slightly fouled HS jet will cause the engine to act as you explain.
