  • 1964 40hp Johnson water questions?

Just got this classic up and running. Got it in a trash can full a water, running it, got water splashing all around but not positive if the cooling system is operating properly. Where should the water go in and then come out? I don't see the typical stream coming out like usual.
I've read about water pump failures but I'm a tad new to this stuff. Thanks guys

At the extreme rear portion of the engine, a short distance down the long exhaust housing cover, you will see a good size hole which is a exhaust relief and also a water exit.

When the engine is running, water should shoot out that hole like it was being forced out a garden hose in mass.

NOTE that when in a test tank, barrel, trash can, whatever, the water level MUST be approximately 3" above where the lower unit bolts up to the long exhaust housing.... otherwise pump damage may result.
