  • Evinrude 250HP 2007 ETEC intermittent loss power/rpms

My 2007 250 Evinrude a few months ago started losing power /rpms running on a couple of cylinders then the engine will kick back on with 100% power. When I am having this issue with the engine if I put the engine into neutral it begins to fast idle. If i turn the engine off and restart it will idle normally. This lose of power has progressively got worse. My mechanic and I have tried about everything. A scan of the engine shows no codes. Any ideas

Has your mechanic looked very closely at the stator under the flywheel to see if the two large black coils that are spaced closely together are starting to melt down?

The stator is the beginning of both the ignition and the battery charging system, the two large black coils being the ones that provide approximately 300 AC volts to the powerpack capacitor.

When those coils start to melt down, the stator may act normally at first... BUT... when it gets hot, the igniiton becomes erratic, intermittent, weak, and eventually there is no ignition.

Meters may give a perfect reading when this meltdown takes place at first, especially when the engine is cold. Bottom line... if there is a meltdown of these coils (even one), replace the stator regardless of what reading one might receive.
