  • Johnson Identification

Im trying to first Identify this engine. I can not find any model or serial numbers. The closest I have came is a part diagram similar to it which is a 1985 Johnson 120. Posted below are pictures I uploaded. Note: on the carburetor 395038 There is an intermediate air bleed orifice but there is no air bleed orifice below it instead a phillips head screw was capping it. One part diagram states there should be a number 14 orfice in that place and another states that the number 14 orfice is only for the 140 model. The issue I am having is the engine will only idle about 1 minute then die. I have removed all the carbs and manually cleaned all jets and orifices carefully and soaked the carbs and set the float levels. I have also replaced all the gas lines and recirculation lines. I have not seen any check valves unless they are built into the nipple where the lines hook into the block. Compression is as follows #1 125 #2 120 #3 122 #4 125 All spark plugs are wet and black (I just installed New plugs) This engine has new plugs, cdi box coil packs, spark plugs, oem carb rebuild kits and new starter. I have also properly adjusted the throttle cables where all butterflies are closed. I'm just worried i may be looking at the wrong year and it may instead be post 87 due to the 3 wire vro harness that was cut by someone and swapped to traditional premix pump. All help is greatly appreciated

Head part number indicates that it looks to be late 80's-early 90's looper 120-140 hp.
Sorry don't have an answer for the idle problem.

Thank for the input. Yea i researched it as well and here is an update on my research to anyone else who reads. It has a butterfly pack which puts it atleast an 88 and up model and it has fastrac trim which would put it at 91 presuming no one upgraded it. All the carbs have 120 on them so im assuming 91 120hp The top intermediate idle air orfice that was not plugged is a 43 so I ordered number 14's for the bottom idle air to see how that works. I'm assuming with the idle air orfice blocked off that is why im getting the wet plugs. All input is welcome, I'm just trying to get this motor right and get rid of all the rigging.
