  • Engine Quick Change in RPM

Hi, I would appreciate any help or suggestions.

I have a 1969 33 HP johnson motor. All season long it has been running great. I took it out yesterday and at half throttle it would work great, but whenever I tried to go full throttle it would change rpm's quickly. It would rev up, and slow down, rev up and slow down.

I thought it was just my fuel mix so I took it out again today with the fuel mixed better, but now it revs and slows even at half throttle, and I have to run it at about 1/3 throttle.

A few things I think it could be are fuel mix, dirty carb, overheating, or loss of oil in the reservoir. I also just learned that I need to be using premium gasoline. Could any of these things cause the boat to run like that, and get worse over time?

I would appreciate any help, as I know very little about 2 cycle engines.

    Thank you

Surging, as you describe, usually points at fuel problems. I've not noticed any benefits running premium fuel in my motors except in cost. Ethanol fuel does cause fuel line damages on the insides. If your fuel lines are decaying and blocking fuel pump, needle valves, and jets, then it may need some repairs.

Post back if you find anything. Good luck.
