  • 1964 Johnson 40 cant get flywheel off

Have a puller on it and reefed it down, did some tapping with rubber mallet on edges upward, even lightly with sledge, won't move.

Ok. You have a 3 bolt puller with a large center bolt. The 3 bolts only thread in the depth of the flywheel threads-evenly (any deeper and you may hit stator coils and ruin them), the crankshaft nut should be at the top of threads (prevents crankshaft threads from distorting- making crankshaft no good). Also, do not use screw drivers in flywheel teeth for holding- something costly may break. Once these steps are done, tighten large center bolt as tight as possible, then give a good solid whack straight down on large center bolt. Flywheel should pop. If not, tighten large center bolt again as tight as able, and whack center bolt a good one again. I've not had to tighten more than 3 times for the most stubborn flywheels. Don't hit upwards on flywheel, or pry, let the puller do the work.

    Good luck.
