  • Johnson 50HP seems to bogg down during turns

I am interested in information about the performance of my Johnson
J50DTLECA 50 HP motor. The motor has worked well for many years ,however, it now seems to lose power when steering is approximately 40 degrees left or right of straight. The motor RPM drops from 5500 to about 5100 during turns and the motor makes more noise. I also notice a slight pulsing of the motor during normal operation at mid to high throttle. The motor has a 13" pitch prop. Any help would be welcome.

Not sure what you mean by more noise?
As far as RPMs dropping on turns, and pulsing, might be a prop, or possible fuel problem? Although, if prop, I might expect an increase in RPMs (if starting to slip a little).

So I might look at fuel flow restriction first. If using ethanol gas, you might check lines for soft spots. Ethanol tends to break down interior surface of fuel lines, maybe small black particles are breaking loose? Check filters for any trash, particles, bad gas. The place you're buying fuel may have sold some bad gas (empty contents of filters in glass to see if trash, water, etc.) may be in tank?

Not sure what your max RPMs are, 5500 should be the max. If you're running higher than that at WOT, then you maybe over revving the motor, in which case more noises could be a bad sign?

    Good luck.
