    hello

i have a question my 02 115 johnson outboard was not getting any spark. As i was testing it i found out it was the power pack and optical sensor. But during the time i was cranking it to test for spark i noticed it started cranking different. It sounded like it was cranking with less power as if the battery was dead. I hooked up my jumper cables from my truck to the battery and still no change. A friend of mine said it is a rod bearing that is out. does anyone know anything about a problem like this. I hope it is not a rod bearing.
Any help would really be helpful
    Thank You

If it is a rod bearing, it will be making a knocking sound, or it may sound like it's growling when just starting?

If starter seems to be losing power. How long did you hold key in start position? Amperage going to starter is very high. The rule of thumb for any starter (auto, boat, lawnmower, any electric starter), is not to hold key (start position) for more than 5 - 8 seconds (allowing a little time for windings to cool), any longer and the windings in the starter start to overheat. If held for too much time you can melt/ burn the windings in the starter up. This usually means rebuilding, or replacing starter.

Can take starter to an electric motor repair shop, they can test and tell you if drawing to many amps - bad - shorted out windings.

    Good luck.
