Stator trouble

I have a 1996 Johnson 225 ocean runner j225txede. Tach stopped working and stopped charging batteries. I bought a new stator, but it seems like it's out of time (not running on all cylinders and spitting gas out exhaust). Johnson says stator is 763779 or replaced by 0584586, I bought the latter. Anybody know if I bought the wrong stator, or if the new one is bad? I put the old one back on and it still runs fine.

If charging and tach stopped, my first thought would be rectifier/ regulator? Or, check wiring connections, then replace, as a first step. Did you get a bad reading on stator?
