  • 1978 Johnson starting problems

In order to start my motor I have to choke it every time even if it has been stopped for a short time. I had to squirt a little gas into the intake to get it started otherwise I just keep choking and cranking until it starts. After it starts it runs and idles great.

Change plugs. Only run Champion(worked on mine). Replace fuel pump diaphragm and check carb for buildup

Try running a tank of fuel with sea foam, or other gas cleaning additive through system. Otherwise, you may need to go through and clean carb(s) thoroughly, letting them soak and blowing all pas-sages out with compressed air.

Does your motor have a primer system, some motors did have that? If yours does, that system may need cleaning, before carb(s) cleaning.

Most often if fuel isn't getting in to start motor, it's related to blockages in idle pas-sages or, primer system (if on yours) needing cleaning out, from old fuel sitting in system too long.

If a problem with fuel pump, that does need to be fixed as well.

Good luck, post back how it's going when able.
