1992 175 hp Johnson

I had to chase down some wiring this spring. I chased the neutral cutoff switch all the way to the plug and and found it was broken. I snipped it at both ends and by passed the plug. It started right up. in the process I noticed 3 white wite wires connected to a diode that connected to 3 other wires. not sure what they are but I didn't have the diode so I just used a heavier wire and butt connected them. Not sure if that has anything to do with my problem no but I thought I'd mention it. When I rev up the motor it runs real rough at like 3300 rpms and bounces around. I can't get on plane because of it. I attached a video.

I think you should get a manual, and find the wires you have butt-connected, to make sure they are not connected to the magneto or rectifier/ regulator. If they are related to magneto, or rectifier, then running without the proper connector in that spot could damage all your electronics (power pack, cdi, timing coils, and such).

I would not run the motor at all.

Your magneto puts out AC current that through the rectifier & diodes is converted to DC current, and IF that was a diode you removed, you could be sending AC current where DC current should be going. That might be a costly mistake?

Find a wiring diagram for your motor, look up the wires you changed to see if that was a diode you removed. It might have just been a connector, not a diode?
