1973 Model 6R73S starter problem

Hello,
I removed the starter to service the carb and the mainspring unwound on me in a hurry. Apparently something came apart on the lower retainer plate. I need to remove the spring from the lower retainer plate but I cannot get it to come free.
I have the factory service manual but it the method they describe will not free the spring.
I need some other method to remove the spring from the lower retainer without removing the starter mount to engine bracket. Must I cut the spring to get it free or just how do I go about it.

Again tried to look up your parts diagram, no luck. I can't see the recoil set up you have, so i'm at a loss to try and help you.

help.
Generally the recoil assy can be removed in one piece, but if main spring is loose, I can't imagine what has come apart.
If you would like to post a couple pics of what you have, I might be able to help?
