  • Coil vs. Powerpack - J70TLESB

    Hi y'all...

To replace coil or power pack on a 70hp Johnson J70TLESB, that is the question?

    1. number one spark plug receiving good spark via spark tester.

    2. rang out (3) coil's w/ meter - each well grounded & +/- 240 ohms
    each, primary vs. secondary.

    3. removed power pack, sand papered terminals, re-installed - now spark plug's
one and three have good spark via tester.

Does this sound like a bad power pack, coil or connection?

    Any ideas? Thanks...

You might check neutral/ shift switch, they have been known to cut power to some plugs if the switch goes bad? Safe mode type thing, I guess.

Good luck, post back if find anything.

And stop posting multiple posts, stick with one post, to difficult to answer same thing multiple times.
    Thnx.

Thanks Solarman, got good spark at all three now after cleaning all connections and grounds etc. Still have a problem getting engine to start, have to spray a shot of starter fluid into carbs, then she runs fine. Any suggestions?

Well quit using starting fluid in carbs. If you want to spray something, use pre-mix fuel and oil. Start fluid washes oils away, and has no lubricating abilities. So you can damage your motor using it (2 strokes need oil in fuel). And newer 4 stroke motors have sensors that starting fluids will destroy (autos, and boat motors). When you think of how costly these motors, and their sensors are, it isn't worth the damage.

If plugs are firing, and fuel is getting to plugs then compression and timing of fire are all that's needed.

It doesn't sound like you're getting fuel at start up? Do you have a good bulb and pump it? Another possibility is a weak, or bad low pressure pump? Does your motor have a choke (should do the same thing as start fluid)?

        Have carbs been properly cleaned?

Good luck. Let us know how its going.
