  • 40 hp johnson

I have a 40 hp Johnson its on a 93 bass tracker. Been running fine, last week went to start it, turned the key and it made a whine (beep) but no engine crank. I do hear a click from the motor when I turn the key on. Battery is reading 12.54V. Jumped the big solenoid terminals and the starter engaged and spun the fly wheel just cant do that with the key. What do I need to check to get this fixed. I also did clean the batt. terminals. any help would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like your starter solenoid may be the problem, if as you say, can jump the two posts and it will turn over like it should.
One other possibility, the Bendix on top of the starter, check to make sure it is free to move up (may be rusted and sticking), I've had to clean mine a couple times, due to condensation and rusting problems.

Good luck, let us know how it's going.

i did clean and make sure the Bendix on the starter moved freely. I am taking the Batt. to have a load test done on it today. I am very new to this, is the starter solenoid different from the one i jumped across? Is there any way to check that it is functioning proporley?

If you hear the click when turning key, the solenoid sounds like it is engaging, as long as you aren't pushing choke (sounds similar).
If solenoid is engaging, but starter isn't turning over properly, then good chance the contacts that provide current to starter, inside the solenoid are burned up, or making very poor contact. Either way, it sounds like the solenoid is your problem.

If you jumped across the big posts of the solenoid, and starter worked, and you hear the solenoid click when turning key, but it's not turning starter. Then replace the solenoid.

        Good luck.

Thanks for getting back Solarman, had the battery load tested needed a new one. Installed that and started with the ignition switch and found out i had power to it and leaving it to the solenoid. Unhooked the leads at the solenoid had power to the wires when cranking but wouldnt engage the solenoid. Got to the parts place 5 min. before close and they had my new solenoid on the counter, got it in and i am up and running again. The clicking i heard i guess was the choke. Thanks for the help!
