  • 1986 Johnson 110 HP Water Pump Issues

I recently purchased a 1983 Grady White with a 110 HP V4 Johnson Outboard. The tag number on the motor is J110MLCDC

I recently ordered a waterpump kit for it because it was used in saltwater and the previous owner said it probably needed changed soon.

The kit I ordered does not seem to be the correct one for my lower unit.

The kit I ordered comes with a plastic keyway. It should go on a shaft that looks like this: http://i.ytimg.com/vi/weW3umky380/hqdefault.jpg

The shaft on my lower unit has a key built right onto the shaft and then the impeller simply has a rectangular groove on it to lock the impeller to the shaft.

Also, the wear plate for the water pump has a number of 338485. Another thing I can't figure out is how to remove the wear plate cause the key on the shaft prevents it from sliding it off. I would think there would be some type of groove notched out in the plate to slide it off.

Any help on this matter would be appreciated.

The key on the shaft will pop out. Use a screw driver at the top of the key, and tap it.it should swivel, or slide out. They are in snug.

My phone won't let me pull up the pics right now, but if you look up your part number here (above) online, click on the part number, and it will show you all the motors your parts are used on, and all the years. If not the same as parts you have, get the right ones, they'll fit better. The metal key on shaft is the only one I've ever used. Wouldn't use a plastic key?

Post back if problems. Good luck

Really? It looked to me like it was part of the shaft but I could be wrong. That may explain a few things but it looked like it was steel.

The shafts they have listed for the 110hp on all the sites that I have viewed are def not what I have and will not work because of the design.

The impellor I have looks like this: http://www.offshoremarineparts.com/m...18-3044_lg.jpg

The kit I purchased is like this and will not work on my shaft: Impeller 88-235hp JE - 1-700-310

Check the parts for your motor listed below. Your model motor j110mlcdc, says Johnson (j), 110 (hp), m = (military), l = shaft length, CD = 86 (year), c = sequence of manufacturing.

these are the parts you should google, or buy from a Johnson/ evinrude dealer.
