  • Ignition switch problems

I currently own a 2002, 150 HP Johnson outboard. Over the past two years I have had to replace the ignition switch 3 times. The motor seems to run well until suddenly it kills. If I disconnect the wire coming from the magneto to the switch I can restart the engine. Once I reconnect the wire it will then kill the engine. Could this be caused by a faulty magneto? I have have taken apart all inline connectors, cleaned them and filled with dielectric grease before reconnecting to insure they were not having moisture related issue.

It sounds like you have an issue with a ground wire connecting to your switch that disables power going to the electrical system for the motor to run. Very much like what the kill switch does (is the kill switch bad?). It doesn't sound like a problem with the magneto. I would check with wiring diagram on all the wires leading up to that wire you disconnect. Somewhere it is shorting to ground.

Good luck, let is know what you find when able.
