  • Lugging

I have a 1996 johnson 115 fast strike. Idles fine. When I try to take off and get on plane it starts to lug really bad. I can push the choke in when taking off and will get out of the hole fine and run fine. As soon as I let go of the choke it stalls out again. Can anyone help?

One place you say it is lugging; the other place you say it stalls. Which is it? If it is lugging coming out of the hole, it could be a prop with too much pitch. Otherwise, it sounds like a fuel problem - too lean. Don't run it that way for long or you will burn a piston and cause great damage to your motor.

This modern ethanol gas kills fuel lines (inside) and wipes out fuel pump diaphrams. Check for blockages; check for air leaks. It could be a bad primer bulb blocking the flow of fuel. See what kind of suction it takes to get fuel up out of the tank. Could be a blockage there. Sounds like you have some kind of fuel delivery problem. I cannot tell you where it is; you, or someone who can look at your motor, are going to have to find it.
