I have a 1985 30hp Johnson shortly after leaving the dock it seems like its not getting fuel then would run fine. It had done this multiple times. when returning to the dock after a 10-15 minute drive motor just shut off and would not start. Now will not start and back fires when its turning over. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

First thing I'd check would be spark. Sounds like flywheel may have come loose and stripped key.
Next, check timing sensor.Last edited by Rebel Sympathy; 10-14-2014, 08:49 AM.

thanks for the help. Last night i replaced the spark plugs and took apart and cleaned the carb. also check the fly wheel key and it was good. still would not start but would continue to back fire while turning over. next i am going to check the timing sensor which is located under the fly wheel correct?

Another thought and this is a long shot......
Very rarely, but every couple of years, we'd get in a 25-30-35 motor that would barely run and/or spit/backfire, etc. and what we would find is that the fuel pump had come slightly loose from the powerhead. Of course, it must be tight in order to work properly. It is held on with two screws. You might check that. Also, the fuel pump could be bad. If you take it loose and it is wet with fuel where it attaches to the motor, it is bad. Look for any other cracked or loose fuel lines and fittings while you are inspecting things.
If your timing sensor checks out and your fuel system is good, it may be time to suspect the ol' power pack.
