50/1 or 100/1 gas mix

I recently got a 89 4hp Johnson and have been using the normal 50/1 mix.
Question.. When this motor came out Johnson, if not mistaken, called for 100/1 mix, then they changed back to 50/1 later. Reason I heard was because at 100/1 the motor in storage would tend to rust internally. Just wondering if anyone uses 100/1 in their small motors.. By the way, my 4hp seems to smoke a lot and exhaust ports are always sooty. Any comments would be great............Thank You

Had nothing to do with storage. It had to do with enough lubrication during operation. 100:1 was okay for low rpms - not for high. Cylinders would not get enough lube and would drag pistons and score cylinder walls. 100:1 was a mistake.

Your motor is a 2-stroke. It is going to smoke and get soot around exhaust ports. It is the nature of the beast - just as vibration is the nature of a Harley-Davidson. Most folks don't mind; some it bothers.
