  • Electrical issue in 88 Johnson

I have a strange issue with an 88 Johnson 70 hp , J70TLCCA. It will not crank and Tilt/trim does not work. It is acting as if the batteries are dead as it is getting some power but not enough. Tilt/trim makes some noise and you can here a "click" when trying to start the motor. All fuses have been checked out. The ignition switch has been changed out. The batteries have been charged and checked as well. I even tried jumper cables from my truck to see if that would help. The only other clue is that when I try to start the motor my gauges all go to an extreme reading making me thing it is grounding out but I can not find where. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Wayne

Sounds like bad continuity somewhere in battery circuit. Check for corrosion at both ends of battery cables. And, this is important: When battery cables get old they often fail somewhere between the ends - as in under the insulation. Not easy to see. So, with both hands, flex cables from one end to the other feeling for a weak place that bends much easier than elsewhere. Replace if needed.

Thank you, I will check it out. That would make sense.
