I have a 1985 Evinrude 9.9 X-Long (25") shaft that I used it as a kicker on my Catalina 27 sailboat. When it developed terminal powerhead problems I replaced it with a 1990 Johnson 9.9 Long (20") shaft. While the 20" works adequately on my sailboat, it does not have the "bite" of the 25" X-long shaft, especially in reverse. So, here's my question: could I convert the Johnson to an X-long by swapping out the drive shaft, shift rod and water tube and adding the extension from the Evinrude?
