  • 98 Johnson 40hp Prop Shaft Removal

I am investigating why my prop won't spin. Hit a small tree while fishing and it would not go forward or backwards after that. I figured I stripped the lower unit gears. I drop the lower unit and got the bearing housing out along with the reverse gear (one close to prop). No damage to any of the gears. I can see down to the other gears, no problem there either.

I want to take the prop shaft out along with the other gear. I assume I have to take the nut off the end of the drive shaft to get the gear off the end and pull the shaft? I guess I will also need to take the shift linkage shaft off too?

I know I have to make sure the shift linkage must be the proper length when reinstall takes place, do I un screw it or take the whole linkage housing off? Thanks

Unscrew shift shaft and pull up on prop shaft while pulling out.
