2002 Johnson 150 hp Power Tilt – Solutions don’t match the problem?
After sitting for about 6 months, I went out to crank up the power tilt and it did not work. Discovered that the trim tilt stop switch and the trailer switch were both bad. Replaced both of them. Now the relays would click up and down. Decided to change all five relays anyway. If I by pass the switches and relays and apply (+) power to the blue lead and (–) power to the green lead the motor kicks on and up it goes. If I reverse the polarities down it goes. Oh yes, it is a two wire power tilt motor. However, if I apply only a (+) charge to either lead, nothing happens. (I checked, cleaned and polished every ground connection from th battery and into the engine applying dielectric grease ) If I check power with a meter coming from the power panel, there is continuity from the (+) lead from the battery through to the blue male plug that connects to the trim motor plug lead. But, when I use the trailer switch, or the switch at the helm, the voltage does not modulate between (+) and (-) which I understand it should. I have checked the new switch with a meter, and it does work. I have also bench tested the new trim stop switch - good. Have switched up and down relays just to see - nothing, I have also benched checked all the old and new relays, all appear to be good. Have also checked every fuse I can find with a meter. Batteries are fully charged. There was even a little stainless steel wire connecting the engine mount, trim gauge sender and power trim motor that I removed, polished, reinstalled and checked for ground continuity. HELP!
