  • Johnson 115 1985 wont do more than 2000 rpm

    Hi!

I´m new to boats (sorry if my English isn´t the best, as I live in Denmark (Europe)).

Just got my 17 foot boat in the water for the first time.

The motor will start fine when on the ground with a water hose connected, and will without problem do all the RPM I want.

But when in the water and I put in gear to move forward, it will only do 2000 RPM and no more, even if pump the fuel line to add extra fuel, it won’t take a single RPM more.

The prop is ok, as this was tested on another Johnson 115 motor a month ago.

I´m used to use my fingers, but as I´m new to boats this is “out of my understanding”.

You might start by checking spark, make sure all cylinders are firing.
Take a compression test and make sure you have good compression on all cylinders.
If all the cylinders are firing properly, and the compression is ok, remove the high speed orifices in the carbs and see if any are plugged or restricted.

had the same problem with my motor (2006 GLSDE) and no one could tell me what the problem was although after figuring it out it seems pretty obvious. You have a clogged fuel system, clean and if necessary rebuild your carburetors. remember on your motor the low speed side, which is where your problem is, is on the intake manifold and not the carburetors themselves. the low speed side is a bitch to get cleaned out, be careful and diligent and you'll get it.

the tool you'll need to remove/adjust your low speed needle valves is only available through Evenrude, call them and they will give you the part number so you can order it.

        Hi again!

We found the problem, right blue powerpack was dead. Changed it with a new one and had 5 minutes of great sailing! And then this powerpack died to?!?
I've been looking at the ignition coils and they are not equel left vs right, maybe a wrong ignition coil (the two to the right) "burns" out the powerpack?
