changing water pump

i have a johnson 40hp and need to change the impeller.Will the lower unit drop if I undo the 3 bolts? will I need to undo any linkage before the entire unit drops? I am not familiar with outboards. thanks

You will need to disconnect shift shaft from linkage at engine.

I have a 2000 40hp 2 stroke ( j40 plssm) and read here about that but heard of it being under carb,behind water intake screen and another place. I will look for it at all places. Thanks

yes I found the linkage behind the starter,I removed the starter to access the linkage.on to next problem.

I changed water pump and it still overheated so I removed the thermostat and it seemed to run longer without alarm.Heads were not hot.YES!
