I just bought a Johnson 15 motor, that was bought new in 1989, I cant seem to find the model number, It does have a data tag, but there are no numbers on the tag, just says serial number with kinda blue x's and the same for the model number. It does however have this number on the freeze plug, R8187599.............. Can anyone enlighten me on this little problem as I am in need of a few parts and really dont want to order the wrong ones Thanks

That serial didn't come up but BRP's serial database doesn't have all the older models listed anymore.

Serial number
Can you tell me why the serial number and model number is not on the data plate? If I understand some of the things I have read about the serial number , and this one is R8187599 , does this mean this motor is a 1987 ? and a 9.9 horsepower ? even tho on the motor cover it has Johnson 15 .Thanks

Model number identifys horsepower and year not the serial number. I don't know why data plate is missing.

data plate
Did you maybe read my question wrong? I dident say the data plate was missing, what I said was there are no numbers on the data plate, where the numbers should be, there is strip of bluish-green with x's where the model and serial number should be.

The decal has probably faded out and can't read any longer.
