Timing issues with timing my 9.5 carb to mag

Im having ti time my 9.5 Johnson really high. When I time the carb to the mag to the timing mark, it spits and backfires. When I advance it, it runs better. Whats going on.

as they wear sometimes do have to adjust a little more.

As what wears? The motor, as in compression, or electrical parts.
